My Week in Instagram

I love streaming my instagram photos live on the blog,
it's a fun way to share the smaller, more personal events that happen each week.
Last week I celebrated my 9th wedding anniversary with a quiet dinner out and trip to Construction Junction
We found some solid old doors and beautiful crystal door knobs.

The buggers had their school concerts. They of course sported bow ties and even made bow ties for their besties.

Speaking of school, I finally finished these teacher gifts (a week late and no one is at the school to pick them up, oops)

Received super fabulous favors for J Bugger's Birthday from Whimsical Boutique. I can't wait to show you. J bugger jumped up and down screaming this was going to be the best birthday ever, that good.

I even shared a sneak peek of the party theme, t-minus 2 weeks until party time!

Happy Friday everyone, what are you up to this weekend?

DIY: Nautical Party Table Projects {Part 2}

Yesterday, I shared a tutorial on making a cake plate out of a pie tin. Today I thought it might be fun to show you more DIY elements from the Nautical 1st Birthday theme I styled for Bird's Party Magazine.  I love a good DIY project, so I tackled making the gold cake plates, cake, high chair captain's wheel, peg dolls, a gold number one, and some monkey fist nautical knots.

My attempt at ruffled frosting, not completely terrible for a first try

Don't ask how many hours of online knot tying tutorials
it took me to learn the monkey fist nautical rope knots, way too many

DIY Nautical Party: Pie Tin Cake Plate Tutorial

Even though I had many wonderful vendors involved in this party, I still incorporated many DIY elements into this Nautical Party Table. Below I am showing you which elements are a total DIY such as the ruffled frosting smash cake, hand painted Pirate peg dolls, large gold #1, and cake plates.

My preference was to use any many gold cake plates on the dessert table as possible, so I made my own to save money. Today I am going to show you how I made a cake plate out of a pie tin.

Materials to Make the Fluted Pie Tin Cake Plate:
Fluted pie tin
Candlestick
Gorilla Glue or epoxy
spray paint

Directions:
1. Spray paint pie tin and candlestick separately. Let completely dry in a well ventilated area.
2. Mark the middle of the inside of pie tin. Place the candlestick top over your pencil mark and trace a bigger circle on the inside of your pie tin so you will know exactly where to add glue.
3. If using gorilla glue, wet both places of contact on the candlestick and pie tin.
3. Apply a small amount of glue (it will continue to expand as it dries) and press pieces together firmly. Leave cake plate upside down with a book on top, let dry overnight.

Mason Jar Soap Dispensers {Teacher Gifts} & Coupon Code Included!

This year I decided to give mason jar soap dispensers as teacher gifts.
Who doesn't love mason jars & clean hands?
I have 8 wonderful teachers to buy for,
so I am always looking for cute and economical ideas.

Very Jane offered mason jar soap dispensers pump lids as their deal of the day,
so I scored them for $5 each (regularly $6.50) from The Country Barrel
I didn't have time to make my own soap pumps lids, but there is a great tutorial for the DIYers.
You can even buy them already made for around $10.50-24.00 a piece depending on style.
Cost of buying the lids and pint jars for me totaled $6.00 each.
I even added this super cute (free) mason jar tag and my favorite Whisker Graphics Air Mail Divine Twine
Hope the teachers like their gifts!

Great news! The Country Barrel has generously offered 20% off anything from their store using coupon code: VERYJANE

Mason Jar Craft Organization {Whisker Graphics Post}

For my latest Whisker Graphics project,
I decided to get organized.
I love the way craft supplies look in beautiful glass jars,
but knew I'd have to buy lots of them to fit my craftp.
I was about to recycle a salsa jar when I looked at it again, it was a mason jar and the perfect size for my paper straws.
Hmmm... could work.

It needed a super cute scrolly square label and some twine

Much better.
This project would also be perfect for utensils for parties, teacher gifts, pens, etc...

Time to break out more tortilla chips.

Kid Craft: DIY Mail Boxes {Featured on ediTORIal}

You've seen 'lil buggers mail party, now here's a closer look at how we crafted this working mail box out of cardboard. The whole project took about an hour and cost a total of $3. I shared this DIY tutorial over at ediTORIal  yesterday and am thrilled to share it here as well...

Need a super hero telephone booth, pirate ship, or princess castle? With a little imagination and lots of tape all of these can be made from cardboard. Yes, even a working mailbox.

My youngest son just celebrated his 4th birthday with a First Class Mail Party. No mail party is complete without a mailbox, so we got crafting. I did the cutting and my kids did the painting and decorating. Today I am going to show you how to make your own mailbox. The kids will enjoy crafting with you and you will enjoy the countless {hopefully quiet} hours of mail centered play!

Materials Needed:
2 large boxes of the same widths, they can be different heights
scissors or box cutters
masking tape or duck tape
blue paint (a sample size from the hardware store)
paint brush
pencil
ruler
stickers if desired

Directions:
1. Find 2 boxes that are the same width, they do not have to be the same height. The first box will act as the base of the mail box. The second box will be cut apart for pieces.
2. Use the the smaller flaps from the second box to cut out 2 semi-circle pieces.

3. Turn up the top flaps on your base box and tape the 4 sides together. Then tape a semi-circle to each side of the mailbox.
4. The box should now look like this. Using a ruler, trace 2 lines (stop at the crease of the flap) on the front of the mailbox to create area for a mail slot.
5. Cut 2 slits for the front mail slot
6. Cut out a large piece of the second box to fit the top of the mail box. Bend and mold the piece of cardboard until it begins to form an arc.

7. Cover the top of the mailbox with the molded top piece, secure to the box with tape.
8. Since you are adding another layer of cardboard over the slits we just cut for the mail slot, line up the cut slits and cut 2 more slits, tape the extra flap up. You will not need that layer showing.
9. Cut a handle out of the extra card board. Wrap in tape.
10. Mark where you would like the handles to be on the mail slot.

11. Cut small slits and push handles through, leave an inch extra on the back of the mail slot to tape down and secure handle.
12. Trace out a door at the bottom of the mail box, then cut 3 sides (top, right side, bottom). Do not cut the left side, this is where the door will swing open and closed.
13. Trace a rectangular opening at the top for a second mail slot.
14. Cut out and line opening with tape.
15. Cut out 2 triangles and attach with tape to the sides of the front mail slot.
16. Leave as is, or paint and embellish as desired.
